Brudeli Powerhybrid™ meets EU’s strict VECTO emission regulations – Plug-in Hybrid system to be showcased at IAA Transportation 2024

Brudeli Green Mobility AS is pleased to announce that the Brudeli Powerhybrid™ MK2 system, a major advancement in hybrid powertrain technology for the transport sector, meets European Union (EU) strict VECTO (Vehicle Energy Consumption Calculation Tool) standards.

The VECTO is a standardized method for measuring and reporting the fuel consumption and tail-pipe CO2 emissions of trucks and buses within the European Union.

The Institute of Thermodynamics and Sustainable Propulsion Systems at Graz University of Technology (TU Graz) reviewed and confirmed that the Brudeli Powerhybrid™ MK2 technology meets all the criteria outlined in Regulation (EU) 2017/2400 for Integrated Hybrid Electric Vehicle Powertrain Component Type 1 (IHPC Type 1).

As the transport industry shifts towards sustainability, Brudeli is poised to lead with high-performance, low-emission solutions. The Brudeli Powerhybrid™ system will be showcased at the IAA Transportation 2024 in Hannover, September 16-22, at Hall 12/Booth D40.

While the European transportation industry has developed a strong lineup of light and medium-duty electric trucks, the needed solutions for the more challenging, hard-to-electrify medium and heavy-duty class of truck remains. Truck manufacturers are now preparing to meet the CO2 targets – and can include plug-in hybrid technology to complement combustion engine solutions currently on the market in the medium and heavy-duty truck segment.

“Our mission is to close the gap for fleet owners pursuing the challenging goals of energy efficiency, emission reduction, and cost-effectiveness. The Brudeli Powerhybrid™ represents a significant milestone in achieving brake energy recuperation and plug-in charging across all trucks,” says Lasse Bjørkhaug, CEO at Brudeli.

Plug-in hybrid part of EU’s VECTO system

The Brudeli Powerhybrid™ MK2 complies to the EU’s VECTO system starting in 2024, according to the assessment made by TU Graz. That means credits for trucks with Brudeli Powerhybrid™ MK2 can operate emission free for up to 80% of the time.

The Brudeli Powerhybrid™ MK2 is a highly integrated powertrain component specifically designed for medium- and heavy-duty trucks resulting in low total cost of ownership while reducing emissions of up to 80% compared to diesel. The patented dual e-motor system comprises of proven modules. The real time energy usage and the level of zero-emission-driving is optimized, based on factors such as vehicle speed, load, driving patterns, and battery charge levels. These factors enable maximum fuel economy and performance for each specific truck application.

As a result, the Brudeli Powerhybrid™ MK2 provides fleet operators and truck makers with a compliant powertrain option that meets the evolving demand of sustainable mobility. Together with partners, Brudeli aims to launch the first pilot trucks on the roads in 2026, with serial production starting in 2028.

Power, Performance, and Flexibility for the future of freight

The hybrid capabilities of the Brudeli Powerhybrid™ MK2 apply to fleets – whether they operate on diesel, renewable natural gas (RNG) also known as biomethane, or hydrogen.

The plug-in 200-400 kWh battery can be charged both during the day and overnight using cost-effective Level 2 chargers, minimizing operational costs compared to DC fast chargers.

“It’s crucial to reduce emissions from medium- and heavy-duty trucks, which account for 5% of global carbon emissions and where 60% of carbon emissions stems from long-haul 300-1000 km/day routes,” says Bjørkhaug. “Our Brudeli Powerhybrid™ enables zero-emission operation in sensitive areas while maintaining diesel like-range, payload and flexibility.”
